ALBERTA'S OIL SANDS

Canada's oil sands are thought to hold 270 to 397 billion m3 (1.7 to 2.5 trillion bbls) of bitumen in place, of which about 48 billion m3 (300 billion bbls) are considered to be recoverable with current technologies and processes. Canada's reserves are developed by Alberta's oil and gas industry in some of the most challenging and varied conditions on the globe. This highly competitive industry is skilled in dealing with temperature extremes, permafrost, and vast distances. It makes the annual ADIFP trip strongly interesting for future PhD of oil industry.

The ADIFP trip has been organized from May the 26th to June the 05th. In collaboration with the Edmonton University, talks and poster sessions about different oils and gas issues treated at IFP had been organized from May the 28th to May the 29th at University of Alberta.
After the symposium, PhD students had the opportunity to visit Aurora oil sand mine and research center of Syncrude and the joslyn field operated by Total near Fort McMurray.

A WORD FROM THE DIRECTOR OF DOCTORAL STUDIES AT IFP

A study trip to Edmonton is a very nice opportunity for young researchers to discover state of the art upstream as well as downstream oil and gas techniques , including extra-heavy crude mining and upgrading facilities and associated challenges. Such an experience will strongly stimulate our students' open-mindedness, and therefore contribute significantly to help them meet their future challenges within the industries of the energy supply chain.

Hervé TOULHOAT, IFP Professor
